Nuristan National Park

Nuristan National Park is one of Afghanistan’s most untouched and spectacular natural regions, located in the forested mountains of eastern Afghanistan. Known for its dense cedar and pine forests, crystal-clear rivers, and steep green valleys, Nuristan offers a completely different landscape compared to the deserts and high plateaus seen in much of the country. Many travelers describe it as Afghanistan’s “hidden green world.”

The park is home to rare wildlife such as snow leopards, markhor goats, and many bird species. Its traditional wooden villages, built on mountain slopes, give visitors a glimpse of a unique culture and architecture not found anywhere else in Afghanistan.

Visitors can enjoy peaceful hikes along rivers, explore forested trails, or visit local villages to learn about Nuristani culture. The area is ideal for nature lovers who appreciate quiet landscapes, clean air, and remote mountain scenery.

Travel to Nuristan can be challenging due to narrow mountain roads and limited transport options. It’s best to arrange the trip with experienced local guides who know the routes and communities. Because the region receives heavy rainfall and occasional snow, the best time to visit is late spring through early autumn.

Since Nuristan is still a developing protected area, visitors should help keep the environment clean, respect local traditions, and support community-based tourism whenever possible.
